University of Reading
Eligibility: Any UK-based Ph.D student.
A three-day conference for UK-based Ph.D students of atmospheric and oceanic sciences to promote current research, assist career development, and encourage interaction across related disciplines.
Conference details
The conference brings together much of the UK Ph.D student community studying topics in meteorology, atmospheric, and oceanic sciences. This is an opportunity to present and discuss your work in an informal environment - i.e. without any lecturers present!
We would like you to encourage your friends to attend, but don't be afraid to attend if you're the only one from your institution involved in atmospheric or ocean sciences - the student community will make you feel welcome! There will be icebreakers so that everyone can get to know each other, and a conference dinner.
There will also be a careers fair and a careers talk at the conference.
Comments from delegates about past conferences:
"The student conference is a relatively informal forum in which to present research, as well as to practice asking and answering questions about that research. Informal and friendly but definitely challenging!"
“I recommend that all UK Ph.D students doing meteorological research attend this conference at least once, as it allows you to meet a good cross-section of the student community doing meteorological research.”
“[I] found it a very worthwhile experience for presentation practice, building confidence and answering questions. The conference also allows time for plenty of discussion following the talks, which has helped spark ideas for my future work as well as putting me in contact with new people in my research area through suggestions from other students.”
"It is an excellent forum for young scientists to get together and share ideas and practice presentational skills and science communication."

Instructions and advice for presenters
Talk Guidelines
Presentations will be held in one of the lecture theatres of the Meterology Department. Talks should last no more than 12 minutes, with 2/3 minutes for questions. Speakers are asked to meet their session chairperson (who will wear a committee member badge) at the front of the lecture theatre ten minutes before they start to check that their presentations are ready to run.
As soon as possible after registration speakers must contact the RMetS IT manager, Kathy Maxwell, in the conference registration area to have their presentations loaded onto the appropriate computer. These should be made available on USB/CD/DVD media. Kathy should be your first port of call if you have any technical requirements or difficulties before your session starts. Please back up all your work and save all the images which are incorporated into your presentation separately. Presentations that are not pre-loaded cannot be guaranteed to run. We can accommodate Powerpoint 2007 presentations or lower.
If you have any particular requirements then you must contact Kathy Maxwell before your arrival.
Some tips for making presentations can be found on the following websites:
- IASTED PowerPoint presentation tips
- Some comments on presentation technique
- Beamer is a presentation class for LaTeX, and arguably more professional-looking than PowerPoint. An example presentation can be found here. It is a bit fiddly (like everything in LaTeX), but the results are well worth the effort.

Poster Guidelines
Posters will be on display throughout the conference, and presenters will be required to stand with their poster during a poster session on the afternoon of Saturday 4th July. Poster boards are 1.2m high by 1.2m wide, so the maximum poster size is A0 (841mm X 1189 mm), portrait or landscape style. Please note that if you intend on using your poster at the Main RMetS Conference they will only accept portrait style posters.
We ask that all delegates attach their posters to the display boards before the first session on the morning of Friday 3rd July. This should be done upon arrival at the Meteorological Department, to allow for general viewing, and by morning tea/coffee break at the latest. RMetS Committee members cannot accept responsibility for the loss of any posters which are not removed before the close of the conference.
Some tips for making posters can be found on the following websites:
- Inkscape is a powerful open source vector graphics package which can be used to create effective posters. It is available for Win/Mac/Linux.
- BA Perspectives 2007. The ~30 finalists in the 2007 BA Perspectives poster competition - lots of examples of good and bad technique.
