17.10.00 A new series in Weather - images/articles wanted

During 2001 a new regular section called Weather Images will appear in Weather. This will consist of a weather image, with a short description of the phenomenon illustrated by the image, taking up to 1 page of the magazine. Typical images are expected to be monochrome and to draw from satellite pictures, radar, aircraft or other instruments. Contributions to this new section are invited. Please send them to "Weather", 104 Oxford Road, Reading RG1 7LL, or electronically to weather@royal-met-soc.org.uk. Electronic submission of both image and text is welcomed.

09.10.00 Seminar on the Accreditation of Meteorologists in Europe

Organized in the framework of the conference Meteorology at the Millenium to celeberate RMS' 150th anniversary and the Meetings of EMS Council and Members, an international seminar on accreditation of meteorologists was held on 11 July 2000 in St. John's College, Cambridge, U.K. Participants from Europe and Australia first heard presentations which was followed by a discussion segment.

This web site presents material from the presentation, as well as Questions and Answers from the plenum discussion. More material will be added as soon as it becomes available.

PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT

THE WORLD WEATHER RESEARCH PROGRAMME'S (WWRP) INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON QUANTITATIVE PRECIPITATION FORECASTING (QPF) 2-6 SEPTEMBER 2002, UNIVERSITY OF READING, UNITED KINGDOM

Being able accurately to predict precipitation, in terms of both location and timing, is of benefit to almost all of our global society and industrial sectors. The ability to have advanced warning of precipitation and its effects enables us to provide valuable services to such beneficiaries as, for example, agriculture, aviation, hydrologists and emergency response teams. Many different advances in computational and modelling techniques are now beginning to lead to significant improvements in the field of QPF. It is a timely opportunity to bring together both the supplier and user communities to share and review these achievements and to provide a focus for future developments in this field.

The Programme Committee, on behalf of the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP), is therefore pleased to announce its international conference on Quantitative Precipitation Forecasting (QPF) to be held at the University of Reading in the UK, from 2 to 6 September 2002.

The conference will cover a wide range of issues relating to QPF, from the measurement and forecasting of precipitation through to the application and benefits of quantitative information of precipitation fields and will conclude by identifying gaps in current knowledge with key future areas of work. A call for Abstract submissions will be announced in Mid 2001 under the topic headings of:
