

Artificial Intelligence and Numerical Weather Prediction

This will be a 45 minute talk followed by 15 minutes for questions. The in-person meeting will be held at the Augustine United Church, Edinburgh, EH1 1EL. The lecture will begin at 6 pm and will be preceded by tea and biscuits from 5:30 pm. Those viewing the lecture remotely can join from 5:50 pm using Zoom and the event will start promptly at 6 pm. Please note that joining instructions will not be provided unless you have registered.
Speakers
Kirstine Dale
Kirstine Dale is the Met Office's Chief AI Officer (CAIO) and Principal Fellow for Data Science. As CAIO she is charged with embedding AI in the Office’s core business: initially focusing on the use of AI in weather forecasting through leadership of the ‘AI for numerical weather prediction’ (AI4NWP) programme. As a Principal Fellow, Kirstine plays a leading role in shaping the future of Data Science (including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning) in the Met Office.
At the Turing Institute, Kirstine is Co-Director of the Natural Environment Theme of the Research and Innovation Cluster on Digital Twins.
Kirstine is also the Co-Director for the Joint Centre for Excellence in Environmental Intelligence, a collaborative initiative between the Met Office and the University of Exeter. This focuses on leveraging data science and environmental insights to address critical changes related to climate, weather and sustainability.
Kirstine is a strong and longstanding champion for increased diversity, equality and inclusion and the power of interdisciplinary working.
