The Beast from the East and the Stratosphere?
LOCATION
University of Leeds
Leeds LS2 9JT
SPEAKER | Dr Amanda Maycock, University of Leeds.
ABSTRACT | From late February 2018, the UK experienced a period of prolonged cold weather and snow, causing disruption in many regions. This spell of wintry weather coincided with a stratospheric sudden warming event. During such an event, there is a rapid rise in temperature and slowing of winds tens of kilometres aloft over the Arctic. Sudden stratospheric warmings are known to affect European surface climate for up to two months after their onset, causing advection of cold air from the east and increased risk of wintry weather. This talk will revisit the conditions during the Beast from the East and describe the relationship to the sudden stratospheric warming event. Other examples of recent severe UK winters and links to stratospheric events will be discussed.
