ABSTRACT | Recent summers have seen temperature records challenged across the northern hemisphere. Here in the UK summer mean temperature for 2018 was the highest on record for England. During 2019 the summer averages were not record breaking, but during the year there were two exceptional spells of weather which saw the highest winter temperature (21.2 C, Kew Gardens) and the highest summer temperature on record (38.7 C, Cambridge Botanical Gardens) in the same calendar year. In this talk I will reviewed the key meteorological and climatological drivers and context for these events.
This meeting is part of the Royal Meteorological Society Meetings programme, open to all, from expert to enthusiast, for topical discussions on the latest advances in weather and climate. Free to attend. Non members are welcome.
