How Can We Ensure Resilience of the Energy System to Both Climate Change and Extremes?
LOCATION
As energy systems transition to incorporate more weather-dependent renewables, these systems become more vulnerable to the impacts of both climate change and extreme weather. Addressing these challenges requires a deep understanding of both the transition risk associated with climate change and the immediate impacts of extreme weather.
This event brings together academics and energy sector professionals to discuss our understanding of how climate change and extreme weather affect the energy sector and how we can ensure resilience in a changing environment.
Experts will introduce the reasons why both climate change and climate variability matter for the energy sector. This will be followed by insights on how information about climate change and extremes is used to ensure energy sector resilience in industry. The event will conclude with a panel discussion, providing attendees the opportunity to ask questions and engage with speakers.
This event is open to all, but broadly aimed at those working across meteorology and/or the energy sector, who want to learn more about the challenges climate change and extreme weather pose for energy system resilience.
Speakers
Why does climate change matter for the energy sector?
Hannah Bloomfield, Newcastle University
Why does extreme weather matter for the energy sector?
Emily Wallace, UK Met Office
How is information related to climate change and extremes used by those in industry?
Will Hodder, EDF R&D
