The life of a Met Office Operational Meteorologist. An insight into Exeter’s forecasting hub, what goes on in there and how.
This summer taster session is designed to get an overview into how the Met Office Services Operations Centre in Exeter is structured. We will take a dive into what forecasters do on a daily (and nightly!) basis, as well as answer any questions you may have. Right across the world, every single day, people make decisions based on the weather and our changing climate. The Met Office combines weather and climate science and data with expert insights to help with those decisions so people can be safe, well and prosperous. Everything the Met Office does is based on world-leading science and enhanced by the close working relationships they have with partners around the globe. The Met Office collect and make sense of massive amounts of data every day, using cutting-edge technology to deliver it into the hands of the people that need it, when it matters.
Speakers
Amy Bokota: Senior Meteorologist and Media Advisor. Amy has always loved the sea and this led her to study Oceanography and French at the University of Southampton with a year living and studying in Bordeaux. During this course she became interested in climate dynamics and then ultimately the weather. She joined the Met Office in 2015 and since qualifying has enjoyed working all over the UK and the world with tours to the Falkland Islands, Cyprus, St Helena and most recently and excitingly Antarctica! Outside of work Amy can normally be found by the sea in her semi-converted campervan looking for some waves to surf – come rain or shine!
Steven Keates: He has always been fascinated by the weather since a young age and feels very privileged to have a job that is much a hobby as anything else. He has worked at the Met Office in various forecasting roles since 2007 and currently one of the Deputy Chief Meteorologists in our Expert Weather Hub. Outside of work he is a keen golfer and gardener, foodie and traveller.
