The Royal Meteorological Society is celebrating its 170th anniversary during 2020.
Update due to COVID-19
Following Government advice the Society has decided to cancel or postpone all public events before July, and possibly longer. If you were already registered for this event you will hear directly from us with more detail. We are currently looking into the possibility of running a number of virtual events over the coming months and will keep you updated on future plans. This includes the Annual General Meeting which we may need to run as a live, virtual meeting in the coming month. We will keep you updated via the website and membership emails (if you currently don’t receive monthly membership emails and would like to, please contact membership@rmets.org)
The Society was founded as the British Meteorological Society on 3 April 1850 when a small group of gentlemen met in the library of astronomer Dr John Lee’s home, at Hartwell House in Aylesbury, England. They gathered “to form a society the objects of which should be the advancement and extension of meteorological science by determining the laws of climate and of meteorological phenomena in general”.
The Society became the Meteorological Society in 1866, when it was incorporated by Royal Charter. In 1883 it became the Royal Meteorological Society, when Her Majesty Queen Victoria granted the privilege of adding ‘Royal’ to the title. Amalgamation with the Scottish Meteorological Society took place in 1921.
Over the years, a number of historic and notable events have taken place within the Society and the meteorological community as a whole. With continually advancing technology, there have been numerous changes to the way the Society operates, the way in which it delivers its strategic objectives, and its support to the meteorological community and wider benefit to all.
During 2020 we will celebrate our history, as well as taking a look forward at the exciting things the future has in store for the Society. A number of activities and events will take place during the year, including our May National Meeting and AGM that will take place at Hartwell House, where it all began 170 years ago.
REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED.
