VIRTUAL | Scotland's Climate Change Science and COP26
LOCATION
The Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Scottish Centre of the Royal Meteorological Society hosted an online conference on Wednesday 6th October on the science and impact of climate change.
In the lead-up to CoP26 in Glasgow, the conference brought together some of Scotland’s leading climate scientists to discuss the current understanding of climate science, including the latest assessment from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
The event considered current and future impacts of climate change, including on temperatures and storminess, heatwaves and food production. It also discussed the societal action required to limit the impact of climate change and to meet ambitious net zero targets.
The conference provided an opportunity for the public to discuss these issues with, and to put questions to, leading climate scientists. It was also an opportunity to learn more about CoP26 and what we can expect from it.
MEETING CHAIR: Mr David Warrilow, Vice President, Royal Meteorological Society
SPEAKERS:
Dr Michael Byrne, Climate Scientist, University of St Andrews
Dr Neil Fraser, Scottish Association for Marine Science & University of the Highlands and Island
Professor Gabriele Hegerl FRS FRSE, Personal Chair - Climate System Science, University of Edinburgh
Professor Pete Smith FRS FRSE FRSB FNA (India), FEurASC, Professor of Soils and Global Change, University of Aberdeen, and Director of the Scottish Climate Change Centre of Expertise (ClimateXChange)
Professor Janette Webb MBE, Professor of Sociology of Organisations, University of Edinburgh
