Weather Radar in the UK - What the Upgraded Network Brings Us.
LOCATION
Whiteknights, Reading RG6 6AH
SPEAKER | Dr Rob Thompson, Dept of Meteorology, University of Reading.
ABSTRACT | The UK weather radar network is comprised of 15 operational radars and an identical research facility. Over the last few years the Met Office radar network for the UK has undergone a major upgrade, with all 16 radars now using dual-polarisation technology on an in-house designed and created bespoke radar – allowing excellent performance and great scope for improvements. In this talk, I’ll cover the impressive new radars, what extra information the upgrade has given us from the radars, what is currently used from them – that is already providing improved rainfall estimates across the country, through better quality control and improved handling of heavy rains. We shall also look in to the future of what promise there is for yet more developments
