Andorra Weather Meeting 2025

I was lucky enough to receive an invite to the 8th edition of the Andorra Weather Meeting, which as the name suggests is held in Andorra — a small but stunning mountainous country in the Pyrenees between France and Spain.

This annual event brings together weather and climate professionals from around the world to share insights, experiences, challenges and innovations in weather forecasting, meteorology and related fields. While most of the attendees are weather presenters based in Europe, this year we were joined by one attendee from Brazil who had never seen snow before.

During the event, notable presentations included:

Carlo Buontempo, Copernicus
Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, discussed climatology and informed decision making.

Watch Kirsty chat to Carlo about Europe's warmer winters.

Vicent Altava, Meteocat
Vicent Altava from the Meteorological Service of Catalonia shared his insights on regional weather patterns, including the DANA event that led to devastating floods in Valencia in October 2024.

Kirsty asked Vicent about the DANA event of October 2024.

Laura Trapero from Andorra Research + Innovation
Laura Trapero from Andorra Research + Innovation presented a study on meteorological phenomena in mountainous areas, and how thermal inversions are affecting air quality.

We also made the most of our spectacular location, hitting the slopes of Pal-Arinsal and Grandvalira for skiing and snowboarding, followed by some amazing mountain dining experiences in Ordino Arcalis and Coll de la Botella. I also took time out to investigate the use of artificial snow in Europe's ski resorts.
