Relatively weak El Niño conditions persist in the south Pacific and are predicted to continue throughout the northern hemisphere summer and possibly into autumn and winter. El Niño has delayed the onset of the Indian Summer Monsoon by about 1 week.

May was a very active month for tornadoes in the USA – preliminary data suggests that it may have had the most recorded May tornadoes on record. This follows other abnormal tornado events earlier in the year, including in Nepal and Germany. 

In the Indian Ocean, cyclone Vayu formed on 10th June and reached Category 3 (major hurricane) on 13th. Despite not making landfall, Vayu caused coastal flooding and wind damage on the west coast of India. 

Severe flooding has been affecting southern China, with the north of the country braced for drier than normal conditions.
