New book - Dynamics of The Tropical Atmosphere and Oceans
We are thrilled to share the latest addition to our Advancing Weather and Climate Science Book Series with Wiley - Peter Webster’s Dynamics of The Tropical Atmosphere and Oceans.
Peter J. Webster, PhD, is Professor Emeritus in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology. In this new book he presents a unique and thorough view of the fundamental dynamical and thermodynamic principles underlying the large circulations of the coupled ocean-atmosphere system.
Webster describes a variety of large-scale tropical circulation systems (those measuring several thousand kilometres on a timescale of days to weeks) and how they interact with a multitude of higher frequency systems (those on a sub-daily timescale). Topics covered include: the Hadley and Walker circulations, monsoon circulations, interactions between the tropics and extratropics, El Niño and the Southern Oscillation, equatorial waves, disturbances, precipitation distributions and the changing structure of the tropics under climate change.
Throughout the book, Webster provides detailed descriptions of the individual elements of the ocean and atmospheric circulations (a reductionist perspective), but also physically describes how, all together, these elements produce the observed tropical weather and climate (a holistic perspective).
Dynamics of the Tropical Atmosphere and Oceans is aimed at advanced undergraduate and early career graduate students, but also serves as an excellent general reference book for scientists interested in tropical circulations and their relationship with the broader climate system.
