Remembering James Milford and Peter Ewins
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of two distinguished figures from the meteorology and climate science communities, James Milford and Peter Ewins.
James Milford, a founding member of the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading, passed away last Sunday. James was the first lecturer appointed to the department in 1966, joining Professor Sutcliffe in establishing what was then a new and innovative academic focus. After retiring from the department in 1994, James continued to influence the field by taking an academic position in Zimbabwe, where he worked in agrometeorology until the political situation led him to return to Reading. His funeral will take place on 10th February 2025 at Christchurch, Reading. Those who knew James and wish to attend are warmly invited to pay their respects.
Peter Ewins, former Chief Executive of the Met Office, passed away on 20th December 2024 after a prolonged battle with Parkinson’s disease. Peter, who had led the Met Office from 1997 until his retirement in 2004, played a pivotal role in transitioning the Met Office from its Bracknell location to its new home in Exeter in 2003. Despite being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease shortly before his retirement, Peter remained committed to his work and to his family. His funeral will take place on Thursday, 30th January 2025, at 1pm at St Mary’s Church in Frensham, Surrey, followed by a gathering at Millbridge Court. Those who knew Peter and wish to attend are warmly invited to pay their respects.
Both James and Peter have left behind a legacy of dedication, passion, and influence that will continue to inspire those who follow in their footsteps. Our thoughts are with their families, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
