Vacancies for Members of Council

Celebrating our 170th anniversary this year, the Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS) is the leading independent expert in weather and climate. As a registered charity we have a mission to engage, enthuse, educate and empower by promoting the understanding and application of weather and climate science for the benefit of all. The Society works to strengthen the science and raise awareness of the importance of weather and climate, support meteorological professionals and inspire enthusiasts.

Our programmes are broad and diverse, with activities and events held for members, the general public and wider meteorological and climate community.

We are currently looking to fill vacancies for Members of Council retiring on 30 September 2021. The positions are as follows:

  • Vice President (President Elect)
  • Vice President
  • Chair of Scientific Publishing Committee
  • Chair of Education Committee
  • Member

Vice President (President Elect)

The President serves a 4-year term of office: one year as Vice-President (President Elect), two years as President and one year as Vice-President (outgoing President).

The President of the Society plays a very important role in presiding over all the Society’s activities and strategic developments working very closely with the Executive Team, especially the Chief Executive. The President will typically be a highly respected individual within the community with leadership experience in the science or application of meteorology in a national and international capacity. The role will act as a figurehead for the Society in promoting and representing the interests of the organisation to key stakeholders.

The President may take up membership of whichever of the Society’s committees they wish to become involved with.

The successful candidate will ideally have a high level of authority, credibility and excellent connections within the meteorological community; a track record of developing strategy and thinking creatively; experience of chairing senior committees and an understanding of inclusive leadership.

Vice President

Three-year term of office

The Vice-Presidents of the Society play an important role in helping to shape the strategic direction of the organisation and have responsibility to oversee the strategic projects and activities, closely working with the Executive Team. A Vice-President will typically be a highly respected individual within the community with leadership experience in the science or application of meteorology in a national and international capacity. 

The Vice-President may take up membership of whichever of the Society’s committees they wish to become involved with.

Chair of the Scientific Publishing Committee

Five-year term of office

The Chair of the Scientific Publishing Committee plays a key role as one of the Officers of the Society in helping to shape and develop the future direction of the organisation and has responsibility to oversee all aspects of the scientific publishing programme of work, closely working with the Head of Scientific Publishing and Wiley.

The successful candidate will ideally have some understanding of scientific publishing and research policy matters and a knowledge of meteorology, data science, climate or other related subjects.

Chair of the Education Committee

Five-year term of office

The Chair of the Education Committee plays a key role as one of the Officers of the Society in helping to shape and develop the future direction of the organisation and has responsibility to oversee all aspects of the education programme of work, closely working with the Head of Education.

The successful candidate will ideally have an understanding of the education system, teaching profession or educational bodies and experience in different sectors of meteorology.

Member

Three-year term of office

The Society is a registered charity and as such, each elected Member of Council serves as a Trustee of the Society. Trustees play an important role in helping to shape and develop the future direction of the organisation and have responsibility to oversee activities to safeguard the Society.

Each member of Council may be asked to take on specific responsibilities to forward the aims and objectives of the Society. These may be one-off activities (representing the Society at a national event, working with a Meeting Manager to help deliver a meeting) or a continuing activity or involvement with a project.

Members may also take up membership of whichever of the Society’s committees they wish to become involved with.
