The Heat is On: The Major Heatwaves of 2022
LOCATION
There have been many record-breaking and unprecedented heatwaves around the world in 2022. Heatwaves are closely linked with Climate Change, occurring more often, with higher temperatures and for a longer duration. Not only this but in the overall trend the first 6 months of 2022 were within the top highest temperatures of all years on record and the Summer in 2022 in the Northern Hemisphere was the 2nd highest temperatures on record. A number of heatwaves took place in 2022, including in Argentina, Australia, India, Pakistan, China and Across Europe and parts of the US. This makes this a very important year to review in terms of not only the meteorology of heatwaves but also in terms of impacts. Here, I discussed the broad scale meteorology but also focused on the impacts of different heatwaves and present a look at how we may address impacts going forward.
Speaker
Dr Chloe Brimicombe, Heatwave Researcher at the University of Reading
Dr Chloe Brimicombe, is finishing up her PhD in Environmental Science at the University of Reading in partnership with ECMWF. She is now a Post-Doc at the University of Graz, Austria on the HIGH Horizon's EU Horizon funded project, looking at heatwave and maternal health in parts of the EU and Africa. Chloe is an award-winning Early Career Researcher in the field of heatwaves and climate change and health, most recently receiving the RMetS Malcolm Walker award. She is well known for her outreach and media appearances talking about natural hazards and heatwave impacts and reporting.
