175 Years of the Royal Meteorological Society: Past Lessons, Present Potential, Future Horizons

As we mark the 175th anniversary of the Royal Meteorological Society, this keynote talk reflects on the Society’s remarkable legacy in shaping the science of weather and climate. Founded in 1850 during a period of rapid scientific curiosity and innovation, the Society has been instrumental in advancing meteorology—from the early days of observations and forecasting to the emergence of satellites and computer modelling. This talk will trace the Society’s historical milestones, honour the contributions of its members and leaders, and explore how its mission is as relevant today as it was 175 years ago. Through archival insights and landmark achievements, we celebrate not just a timeline, but a tradition of excellence, collaboration, and service to academia, to public and private sectors and to the public.
