Climate Change Forum 2022: A Vision for 2050 and Implications for Action

Through the United Nations, Governments have committed to holding global warming to less than 2°C above pre-industrial levels and make efforts to keep the rise to below 1.5°C. The recent sixth Assessment Report of the IPCC makes it clear that to achieve this net global greenhouse gas emissions need to fall to zero by 2050. What does this mean in practice? Are we on track to reach net zero by 2050? If not what more needs to be done? Furthermore, it is clear from recent weather events that we need to improve our resilience to climate change through more effective adaptation strategies – where should our priorities lie?
To address these challenges the Royal Meteorological Society held a Climate Forum on Thursday, 20 October 2022, at the Coin Street Conference Centre, London. It drew on the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Reports exploring a 2050 vision for climate change and our responses to it. The morning session focused on actions on mitigation and adaptation already planned and consider what more is needed, particularly in the UK, with a focus on three key sectors – food, buildings, and transport.
The afternoon’s interactive sessions gave you the opportunity to contribute your views on what the near-term priorities and actions should be in these three sectors to help the UK achieve net zero and climate resilience by 2050. The messages from this session will be used by the Society to inform decision makers and was a major opportunity for you to let your voice be heard.

Call for Posters
We invite poster abstracts that reflect and build on the day’s themes, relevant to the UK. These include the physical science of climate change, its impacts, our ability to adapt and mitigate, and in particular the implications for the buildings, transport and food sectors. We also welcome relevant submissions on science communication and the science-policy dialogue. The deadline for abstract submission has now closed. If you would like to submit an abstract, please email victoria.dickinson@rmets.org to discuss options.
Please note the audience will come from a range of backgrounds. We therefore encourage contributions to be written and presented in plain language.
