Masterclass Series: The impact of climate change on winter storms
LOCATION
SPEAKER |Len Shaffrey, University of Reading/NCAS Professor of Climate Science
This session was part of our Masterclass Series: Winter Storms in European Weather and Climate in partnership with the University of Reading.
Winter storms are one of the main forecasting challenges for the UK and Europe, with many like those over the last winter season leading to significant loss of life and property. In this masterclass series, you had the opportunity to learn about current cutting-edge research on winter storms from three University of Reading experts.
The webinars were free of charge and was held from 3pm to 4.30pm with a presentation followed by the opportunity for questions and discussion with the speaker. Whilst the webinars are part of a series you can choose which to attend and attendance at all three is not compulsory.
Abstract
Understanding and predicting how winter extratropical winter storms might respond to climate change is essential for assessing future weather risks and informing climate change adaptation strategies. This lecture will cover the following areas:
1. What do observational records tell us about how extratropical storms have varied historically?
2. How do we expect extratropical storms to change in the future? How well do climate models represent extratropical storms and what do the latest climate models projections tell us?
3. What are the remaining knowledge gaps in terms of how extratropical storms might respond to climate change?
Biography
Len Shaffrey is a Professor of Climate Science at the University of Reading and the Theme Leader for Climate and High Impact Weather in the National Centre for Atmospheric Science. His personal research focuses on the impact of climate change and variability on weather extremes such as storms, floods and droughts.
Masterclass Series
The webinars are free of charge and will be held from 3.00pm to 4.30pm with a presentation followed by the opportunity for questions and discussion with the speaker. Whilst the webinars are part of a series you can choose which to attend and attendance at all three is not compulsory.
