Winner’s Spotlight: The Power of Persistence in Photography

Fernando Braga lives in the Flamengo neighbourhood of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, and has worked as a software developer for over 30 years. He graduated in Engineering and has a Master’s Degree in Mathematics. He is passionate about photography, which he does in his spare time. His photo, Divine Power, won the public vote for the Standard Chartered Weather Photographer of the Year and was streaks ahead, attracting more than 4,000 votes.
How do you feel about winning the Public Favourite for the Standard Chartered Weather Photographer of the Year?
I feel really happy, fulfilled and thankful to everyone who voted and kept their fingers crossed for me.
Have you won or entered other photography competitions recently?
Yes, I’ve taken part and been a finalist in a few competitions with other photos. With my photos Blessed Blue Moon and Blessed Moon, I was chosen as "PhotoPiller of the Day" in the PhotoPills Awards, both times in 2022. I'm also in the semifinals of the Brasilia Photo Show with my photo Blessed Sun.
Tell us the story behind your winning shot.
I love photographing the Christ the Redeemer statue in all sorts of different conditions. I’ve previously taken photos with him centred against the sun and the moon; countless shots with the sunset or moonrise; with aeroplanes and birds flying over him; and much more.
Around two years ago, I decided I would like a photo of him with a bolt of lightning! So, whenever thunderstorms were forecast and the statue was clearly visible with no cloud cover, if I was at home (that’s where I took photos from), I would try to get the shot, always following the same procedure. I would set my camera to take long exposures continually and afterwards I would check each photo. I started to take photos with a 50 mm lens to have a better chance of catching a lightning bolt close to the statue. I managed to get a few photos of the statue with lightning in the surrounding sky and then I switched to a 70 mm lens.
I made countless attempts without success until last February, when I managed to take a photo of a lightning bolt striking Christ the Redeemer’s head. I called this photo Divine Light, and it ended up going viral on social media and across the media more generally. In March, I was lucky enough to capture another lightning bolt in the sky near to the statue, this time using a 300 mm lens, and this was the photo that was the public’s winner! But I haven’t stopped, I keep going whenever there’s lightning!
How did you become a photographer? What other sorts of photography do you do?
Just over a decade ago, when my daughters were born, I decided to study photography so I could take good photos of them. I bought great equipment, but over the years they would “complain” about me taking so many photos and I decided to take photos of landscapes as well to give them a bit of a break! I don’t really think of myself as a photographer. I prefer the technical side behind the picture, tweaking the settings, as well as the challenge of being able to capture unique moments and encounters. And mainly to capture memories of my family forever.
What inspires you to photograph the weather?
From my house I used to watch the occasional storm, but I had never seen many photos of lightning with Christ the Redeemer and it occurred to me, “why not try to get a photo of a bolt touching him?” So I tried, and in fact I’m still at it!
Tell us about two other favourite photographs that you’ve taken.
One of them is the photo Divine Light in which lightning is striking Christ the Redeemer’s head. Another of my favourite photos shows the statue centred against the backdrop of a supermoon, which I had the very rare opportunity to photograph from my home. I call it Blessed Moon.
Do you have a particular interest in meteorology or weather photography?
I love taking photos of the moon, the sun, the stars, storms, aeroplanes and birds. If I can combine any of these with Christ the Redeemer, even better!
What are your three top tips on getting a great weather photograph?
1. Choose a safe and sheltered place.
2. Check the weather forecast in advance and make a plan.
3. Don’t give up! Never! Keep trying. Don’t stop.
What else would you say to an amateur photographer wanting to take up weather photography or to tell climate change stories through their photography?
I would wish them every success and hope that they are resilient enough to never give up on the photo that they are pursuing.
What are your favourite types of weather in your part of the world?
For photography I prefer skies with sparse, scattered clouds when the sun (or moon) is rising or setting. But if I’m not taking photos, I love a clear sky with no clouds at all, when the sky is nothing but blue, which is in no short supply here in Rio de Janeiro!
What’s next?
I want to carry on photographing landscapes for pleasure, as it’s a hobby that I absolutely love! I also want to carry on documenting my daughters’ and my relatives’ lives, and even my own, to capture these moments forever, because time flies!

Você ganhou ou participou de outras competições de fotografia recentemente?
Sim, já participei e fui finalista em alguns concursos com outras fotos. Minhas fotos Lua Azul Abençoada e Lua Abençoada foram selecionadas para “Photopiller of the Day” no programa de prêmios da Photopills, ambas em 2022. Também estou nas semifinais do Brasília Photo Show com a foto “Sol Abençoado”.
Conte-nos a história por trás de seu disparo vencedor.
Adoro fotografar o Cristo Redentor nas mais variadas situações. Já tinha fotos do Sol e da Lua centrados nele, inúmeros pôr do sol/lua, aviões e pássaros sobrevoando ele, entre outras fotos.
Há cerca de 2 anos, decidi que gostaria de uma foto de um raio nele! Assim, sempre que havia previsão de chuva com raios e o Cristo tinha boa visibilidade (não estava encoberto), se eu estava em casa (de onde fiz o registro), eu tentava e seguia sempre o mesmo processo. Deixava a máquina tirando fotos em longa exposição continuamente e depois verificava cada uma das fotos. Iniciei tirando fotos com uma lente de 50mm para ter mais chances de pegar um raio nas proximidades do Cristo, consegui algumas fotos de raios nas redondezas e passei então para uma lente de 70mm.
Foram inúmeras tentativas frustradas até que em fevereiro consegui uma foto de um Raio que atingiu em cheio a cabeça do Cristo Redentor. Chamei essa foto de “Raio Divino” e acabou viralizando nas redes sociais e mídia em geral. Em Março, tive a oportunidade de registrar novamente um raio, desta vez com uma lente de 300mm nas proximidades do Cristo e que foi a foto vencedora do público! Mas não parei não, continuo atrás dos raios por lá!
Como você se tornou fotógrafo? Que outros tipos de fotografia você faz?
Há pouco mais de 10 anos, quando minhas filhas nasceram, decidi estudar fotografia para ter bons registros delas. Comprei bons equipamentos, mas com o passar dos anos, elas foram "reclamando" de tantas fotos e decidi fotografar também paisagens para poupá-las um pouco (rss). Não me considero bem um fotógrafo. Eu gosto mais da parte técnica por trás da fotografia, das configurações envolvidas e do desafio em conseguir registrar alguns momentos e encontros especiais. E principalmente de eternizar momentos com minha família.
O que inspirou você a fotografar o clima?
De casa eu via as tempestades ocasionais mas nunca havia visto muitas fotos de raios no Cristo e me perguntei, "Por que não tentar uma foto atingindo ele?”. E tentei. Aliás, continuo atrás deles!
Conte-nos sobre duas outras fotografias favoritas que você tenha tirado.
Uma delas é a “Raio Divino” onde um raio atinge a cabeça do Cristo Redentor. Outra foto minha preferida é de uma superlua bem centrada no Cristo Redentor que tive a rara oportunidade de registrar da minha casa e chamei de "Lua Abençoada".
Você tem um interesse particular em fotografia de meteorologia/clima? Conte-nos mais sobre isso.
Adoro fotografar a Lua, o Sol, as estrelas, as tempestades, os aviões e os pássaros. Se puder juntar isso ao Cristo Redentor, melhor ainda!
Quais são suas três dicas principais para obter uma ótima fotografia de clima?
1. Faça isso de um local seguro e abrigado.
2. Consulte a previsão do tempo com antecedência e planeje-se.
3. Não desista! Nunca! Continue tentando. Não pare.
O que mais você diria a um fotógrafo amador que deseja começar a fotografar o clima ou contar histórias de mudanças climáticas através de suas fotografias?
Desejaria muito sucesso e que tivesse bastante resiliência para nunca desistir de uma foto que esteja perseguindo.
Quais são os seus tipos de clima favoritos na sua região do mundo?
Para fotografar prefiro climas com nuvens dispersas e espalhadas durante um nascer ou pôr do sol (ou da lua). Mas se não for para fotografar, adoro o céu limpinho sem nenhuma nuvem, com o céu naquela cor azul de brigadeiro que a Cidade Maravilhosa adora nos proporcionar!
O que se segue?
Quero continuar fotografando paisagens por prazer, como um passatempo e um hobby que adoro bastante! Quero continuar registrando a vida de minhas filhas, dos meus familiares e de mim mesmo para eternizar estes momentos, pois o tempo voa!
