The passing of Andrew Gilchrist

Angela Lovell
20 March 2023

The Society are sad to hear of the passing of former Royal Meteorological Society President and long-term member Andrew Gilchrist HonFRMetS.

Before his retirement Andrew was former Director of Research at the Met Office and was one of the pioneers in climate modelling. For several years he led the branch that was later to become the Hadley Centre.

Andrew had been a member for 73 years and, shortly before he died, he was still taking his daily walk and was able to take a proper interest in life, including reading his most recent copy of the Weather magazine.

A full obituary for Andrew will be published in the RMetS Weather journal in the coming months.

He passed away on 8 March from kidney failure. A funeral service will take place at 11am on Wednesday 5 April, at St Michael and All Angels, Waterford, Hertford followed by a reception at Broad Oak Manor barn.

Anyone who wishes to attend, please contact the Society so we can inform the family of anticipated numbers. info@rmets.org or 0118 2080 142.
