This meeting celebrates the 200th anniversary of ‘the year without a summer’. The various contributions from experts in their respective fields range widely across the themes of climatology, art and literature. The morning is devoted to the more purely climatological aspects of the events, examining the causes and consequences of that remarkable season. But its effects extended more widely to embrace expressions in art – with Turner’s famous sunset paintings – and in literature – where the dramatic weather inspired a sub-theme in the Gothic tradition. These are the themes of the afternoon session including a contribution on Whitby’s most famous son and scientist, William Scoresby Jr. Whitby, with its association with Gothic events, provides an excellent, and delightful, backdrop to the conference.
