SPEAKER: Prof Brian Golding OBE, Met Office.
ABSTRACT: Recent years have seen impressive advances in weather prediction while technology has revolutionised the communication of forecasts and warnings. Using these capabilities to reduce cost and suffering from natural hazards requires that attention is given to the decision making processes of emergency managers, businesses and communities, the information they need, and how it should be communicated. These issues, in turn, are driving a new meteorological research agenda that is increasingly interdisciplinary. My talk will describe some of the recent advances in NWP capability at the Met Office and then introduce a new 10-year programme of the World Meteorological Organisation designed to address the issues that prevent optimum use of forecasts in reducing weather impacts.
