Attribution of Extreme Rainfall events to Anthropogenic Climate Change.

SPEAKER | Dr Jonathan Eden, Coventry University
ABSTRACT | While the anthropogenic influence on long-term climate trends is reasonably well-understood, disentangling the complex network of contributing factors that determine the likelihood and magnitude of a single extreme event is no easy task. Event attribution is an emerging field in climate research that seeks to satisfy both scientific curiosity and public interest about how much more likely the occurrence of a particular event was as a result of global warming.
Attributing episodes of extreme rainfall is particularly challenging. A warming world associated with more heat, more evaporation and, consequently, more moisture in the atmosphere will affect the nature of extremes in different parts of the world in different ways. This talk will provide an overview of the field of event attribution and illustrate some of the present challenges in attributing extreme rainfall events using examples from recent and on-going work.
Venue Information
This meeting is part of the Royal Meteorological Society Meetings programme, open to all, from expert to enthusiast, for topical discussions on the latest advances in weather and climate.
