The Changing Arctic: Does it make a difference to our weather?
LOCATION
SPEAKER | Dr. Richard Hall, University of Lincoln
ABSTRACT | The Arctic is changing rapidly: temperatures are warming rapidly and sea-ice is retreating. This is having an impact on all Arctic systems. A growing body of work is identifying these Arctic changes as being drivers of mid-latitude atmospheric circulation changes. There is only a small sample of years for which Arctic amplification has emerged from the background of more general warming. The talk will explain the physical connections between the Arctic and mid-latitudes, identify other potential forces such as the tropics, and assess the extent to which the Arctic is influencing extreme mid-latitude weather.
