The evolution of climate science.
LOCATION
Clarendon Way
Leeds LS2 9JT
SPEAKER: Prof Dame Julia Slingo FRS OBE, Met Office.
ABSTRACT: From its early beginnings with the ponderings of Edmund Halley on the origin of the trade winds, to the central role it now plays in debates on climate change and the future of the Earth, climate science has been fundamental to understanding our sustainability.
Climate Science is about understanding the Earth’s climate, through a combination of theory, observations and computational models, but it is the models of the climate
system that have revolutionized climate science; they enable us to understand how the climate system works they enable us to identify why climate is changing; and they enable us to ‘see into the future’ and take action. The lecture will discuss the evolution
of climate science and the factors that have transformed it into the challenging science that is today.
This meeting is part of the Royal Meteorological Society Meetings programme, open to all, from expert to enthusiast, for topical discussions on the latest advances in weather and climate. Non members are welcome to attend these meetings.
