Flying over West Africa's Polluted Air.
LOCATION
University of Leeds
Leeds LS2 9JT
SPEAKER | Prof Mat Evans, University of York.
ABSTRACT | Air pollution is a leading environmental health risk. After focussing on the industrial heartlands of North America and Europe, recent emphasis has moved onto the rapidly developing Asian economies. Africa has received significantly less attention. However over the next hundred years Africa's population will grow substantially along with its economic activity. Establishing an understanding of the current air pollution situation will help to provide informed opinions about the future air quality for the region The EU funded Dynamics-aerosol-chemistry-cloud interactions in West Africa (DACCIWA) project is a wide ranging atmospheric program to investigate the air over West Africa focussing on Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo and Benin. The project made measurements into the centre of the cities running along the Gulf of Guinea, from sites inland and three research aircrafts. This talk will discuss what this project found from an air quality perspective and how this information can be used to inform future air quality strategies on a local, regional and continental scale.
