The recent UK Climate Change Risk Assessment identified flooding as the top environment risk to the UK over the next century. In the winter of 2015/16, the UK reported the hightest 24-hour and 48-hour rainfall totals ever recorded, with severe flooding experienced in the Scottish Borders, Dumfries & Galloway and Aberdeenshire. This and subsequent events highlight the need for continued improvement of our understanding of flooding and methodologies to mitigate against flooding.
