ABSTRACT | Professor Derek Elsom explores lightning as a weather hazard in the UK. What are your chances of being struck by lightning? Will you survive if struck and, if so, will that be with minor, serious or life-changing injuries? The risks facing people undertaking different types of activities are considered and recent serious incidents are highlighted. Reasons for the marked decrease in the number of UK lightning fatalities in the past century are examined and the UK lightning risk is compared with other countries. Lightning safety advice and lightning myths are discussed.
