Measuring Meteorology in West Africa at 200mph (in an aircraft!)
LOCATION
University of Leeds
Leeds LS2 9JT
SPEAKER | Dr Phil Rosenberg, Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science, University of Leeds.
ABSTRACT | Africa has some of the most diverse and unpredictable weather in the world, from the dry dusty Sahara, to the tropical thunderstorms of the African Monsoon. Phil will talk about two field campaigns which took place in West Africa. The first is 'Fennec' which took an aircraft over the Sahara in 2011 and 2012 to measure the meteorology, dust and radiation in that region. The second is DACCIWA, which took place in 2016 investigating the low cloud which forms near the coast and how aerosol from large nearby cities may be changing the properties of those clouds. With a bit of luck we can demonstrate these effects with a cloud in a fish tank!
--------------------
All meetings are held in the Seminar Room, School of Earth and Environment, University of Leeds. Tea and coffee is provided in the foyer from 6pm, talks start at 7pm and last about an hour.
