The Panellists
Panel Chair: Prof Liz Bentley - Royal Meteorological Society Chief Executive
Kirsty McCabe, FRMetS
Kirsty McCabe is an experienced broadcaster, Met Office qualified forecaster and Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society. She is the Editor of MetMatters, a source of engaging, accessible weather and climate content. Over the years Kirsty has presented the weather across the UK's major television, radio and digital networks, including the BBC, ITV, Channel 5, The Weather Channel and Sky News.
Before she caught the weather bug, Kirsty began her career looking at the ground. A fascination with the environment and how the world works sparked her interest in Geophysics, which she read as an undergraduate at the University in Edinburgh. After graduation she spent a summer as an intern at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, followed by research on environmental magnetism at the University of Oxford.
Kirsty then switched from academia to science journalism, working as a subeditor for New Scientist magazine before retraining as an aviation forecaster with the Met Office. She began her broadcast career as part of the national BBC Weather Centre team before switching to ITV Breakfast, where she was nominated for a TRIC award in 2011. Nowadays she splits her time between the Royal Meteorological Society, Sky News, MetraWeather UK and BBC Scotland.
When she’s not got her eyes on the skies, family life keeps her pretty busy (she has three young children), and she sings in an award-winning amateur choir.
Chris Ison
Chris Ison is an award-winning, hugely experienced, versatile and trusted commercial photographer, based in Midhurst, West Sussex in the South Downs National Park.
Chris is a photographer through and through - first inspired at the age of 7, turning professional at 18, and enjoying a long and varied career ever since which now spans three decades. He spent 14 years covering some of the world's biggest news and sporting events for the Press Association. And since leaving PA in 2014 he has worked with a wide variety of commercial clients, helping to elevate their marketing and achieve stand-out success in a media-saturated world.
He spends his personal time exploring the landscape looking for weather and locations that elicit emotions from the viewer. This practice, or possibly obsession, lead him to become the current Royal Meteorological Society Weather Photographer of the Year after entering an image taken during Storm Eunice in 2022. An achievement of which he is extremely proud.
