The weather of the Battle of Trafalgar.
LOCATION
University of Leeds
Leeds LS2 9JT
SPEAKER: Dr Dennis Wheeler, University of Sunderland.
ABSTRACT: This presentation reviews the meteorological background to one of the greatest of naval battles, and one that eventually set the seal on European politics for much of the nineteenth century. In an age of sail, wind and weather were vital contributors to approach and enactment of battle. Whilst this is explored in the presentation, the source material has a much wider application in climate change studies and attention is drawn also the huge fund of Royal Navy documents, logbooks in particular, that can be used to shed a fresh light on climate and weather over the past three centuries.
This meeting is part of the Royal Meteorological Society Meetings programme, open to all, from expert to enthusiast, for topical discussions on the latest advances in weather and climate. Non members are welcome to attend these meetings.
