Why we can't just forget the past: historic floods and public safety in the UK.
LOCATION
SPEAKER: Dr Colin Clarke, Charldon Hill Research Station.
ABSTRACT: We know practically nothing about floods before about 1850 because so little was measured or recorded beforehand. In this talk I will outline the events of floods in 1709 at Sherborne Dorset, 1770 at Lynmouth in Devon, and 1857 around Scarborough. Although some people look down on the estimates of peak discharge and rainfall that can be produced from an analysis of historic storms and floods, independent tests can be made on some of the results.
NOTE: This meeting will take place in the Common Room, St Chads College.
