New episode of Distinguished Voices available to members
A new interview as part of the Distinguished Voices podcast is now available. Recorded on 14 December 2022, the recording features Prof John Mitchell FRMetS being interviewed by Prof Chris Folland FRMetS.
The interview covers everything from John’s upbringing, his education and then his career with the Met Office, where he played a key role in establishing the Hadley Centre and subsequently becoming Chief Scientist. It also includes his time serving on many national and international scientific committees, being awarded an OBE and receiving the Royal Meteorological Society’s Symonds Gold Medal.
This podcast is the latest in a series that began in the early 1980s when the Royal Meteorological Society History Group started an audio series of interviews with distinguished meteorologists. The collection has grown to over 25 interviews and more than 50 hours of recorded material, all gradually being made available to members as podcasts.
Each interview covers a similar set of questions, although interviewers were encouraged to adapt the questions according to the interviewee’s background and experiences. Questions cover their earlier life, education and training, career, and scientific expertise.
These recorded interviews, conducted for the Royal Meteorological Society, are the property of the Society, and listeners are asked to bear in mind the interviews are a conversation rather than a literal historical record.
