Grants for Members

11 March 2019

An important way the Society supports excellence in meteorology and contributes to the advancement of the science is via its grant schemes. Up to around £10k is available each year to members of the Society.

The Legacies Fund is made up of small monetary grants made to members (usually younger scientists) to help finance expeditions, carry our research or attend meteorological conferences, for which adequate funds are not otherwise available.

The Carers’ Fund provides small monetary grants to help people attend meteorologically-related events or conferences that someone may not otherwise be able attend because they care for another person. The fund is flexible in its view of the support applicants need, and could include child-minder time, care-worker time or the travel costs of a family member to cover caring responsibilities while the applicant attends a meteorological event.

Applicants for the Legacies Fund and Carers fund must be members of the Society  Applications can be made at any time of the year.

The Royal Meteorological Society also administers the Rupert Ford Award which has been set up by his family, friends and colleagues to honour the name of the late Dr Rupert Ford, whose brilliant scientific career was cut short by illness. This Fund is used to sponsor travel by outstanding young scientists from any part of the world to enable them to undertake research work or study in meteorology or associated physical oceanography (air-sea interaction) at a centre of excellence outside their own countries.
